The first thing you need to know is that all putter shafts flex some amount during the stroke. This adds a variable to the putting stroke we’d rather not have. That’s why stiffer is better with putter shafts; the stiffer a putter shaft, the better it should perform. But there’s an important catch. Historically, golfers don’t put XXX-Stiff shafts in putters because they feel terrible and don’t provide good feedback. It’s hard to know where you’re contacting the ball on the putter face when your putter shaft feels like a tuning fork. And that muddied feedback hurts performance.

The good news is that in recent years, putter shafts have changed for the better. Today’s premium putter shafts use new technologies and constructions to radically increase stiffness without compromising the feedback golfers need to putt their best.
